Government and Public Lawyers Sub-Committee
The co-convenor of the Government and Public Lawyers Sub-Committee is Eric Boucher (Canada).
Under the auspices of the Public and Administrative Law Committee, the Government Lawyers Sub-Committee takes special interest in bringing awareness to the work of government lawyers specifically and public sector lawyers more broadly. Government lawyers may be described as those lawyers who work as in-house counsel in offices of the Attorney General or Ministry of Justice. They may be solicitors, barristers, or legislative counsel.
Public Sector lawyers may be any of the following:
- Crown prosecutors;
- Private practice lawyers who represent the Attorney General in civil matters;
- Lawyers who work for arm’s-length government agencies;
- Lawyers who work for municipal governments;
- Lawyers who advise the Court.
It of course it not compulsory for sub-committee members to be Government or Public Sector lawyers, but our discussions will focus on the work of these lawyers. Some of the topics that may be discussed are the following:
- Ethics for Government and Public Sector lawyers;
- The Independence of Government and Public Sector lawyers;
- Promoting respect for the rule of law from within government through the work of Government and Public Sector lawyers;
- The working conditions of Government and Public Sector lawyers;
- Developing the expertise of Government and Public Sector Lawyers in the Commonwealth
CLA members are encouraged toemail info@commonwealthlawyers.com to join this committee which meets on an ad hoc basis.
